Cultural Excursions to the Surrounding Area
The Wartburg in Eisenach
Only 15 km away from HOHENHAUS you can find one of the most beautiful destinations of the central part of Germany: the Wartburg is situated highly over Eisenach and its forests. It is a great example of mediaeval architecture and belongs to the UNESCO World Heritage. But Eisenach has even more to offer: The Bach House tells about life and work of this brilliant composer. Furthermore, the Luther House, one of the oldest town houses in Eisenach, is a memorial place for the originator of the ecclesiastic reformation - Martin Luther.
The Creuzburg with the Oldest Stone Bridge of Germany
Another small and picturesque town is Creuzburg which is also
located only 15 km away from the HOHENHAUS hotel. There, you
can visit the mediaeval castle of the Thuringian landgraves
and learn about life in the Middle Ages - just go and see the
museum or the pottery workshop. After refreshing yourself in
the beer garden you can go for a walk to the Liborius chapel
and marvel at the oldest stone arch bridge in Germany.
Erfurt with Gloriosa and the Krämerbrücke
The monumental ensemble of the cathedral and the Severi church are the landmarks of Erfurt - the regional capital of Thuringia which is 65 km away from HOHENHAUS. In the cathedral the famous bell Gloriosa impresses the visitors with its lovely sound.
It is also worthwhile visiting the "Krämerbrücke", the only bridge north of the Alps, on which residential houses were built. It is under monumental protection as well as the mediaeval city centre with its careful restored Renaissance and half-timbered houses.
Weimar - Domain of Goethe and Schiller
Weimar - 90 km away from HOHENHAUS - is one of Europe’s most important cultural cities. It is famous all over the world as a place of literature, music and art and is also still closely connected to the work of Goethe and Schiller. These two dramatists are perpetuated in front of the German National Theatre: a bronze statue made by the sculptor Ernst Rietschel symbolises the friendship of the poets. Furthermore, this opus stands for the German Classical Period.
Documenta-City Kassel
The Documenta in Kassel is the most important exhibition of contemporary art in the world. But you can also experience history in this city that is 70 km away from HOHENHAUS. The park on the mountain Wilhelmshöhe offers baroque and English garden art. On the top of this parkway the breathtaking and 8.25m high statue of Hercules is enthroned.
Additionally, the Brothers Grimm Museum enchants its visitors with a comprehensive collection of fairy-tales.
Gotha - Former Residency of the King
Gotha, a time-honoured town and former residency of the king, is located about 50 km away from the hotel HOHENHAUS on the northern edge of the Thuringian Forest. There, it is worthwhile visiting Friedenstein - a castle of the early baroque period. Besides, a museum of natural history displays up to 300 years old exhibits from the incipiencies of the ducal art and nature cabinet. It is housed in an architecturally interesting building put up in Wilhelminian style.
